Brain health and the built environment
In 2017, I started a research project looking at how environments affect mental health focusing on ways space can alleviate anxiety and improve moods.
Why is this Important?
1 out of every 5 Americans takes drugs every day to relax, and the numbers continue to increase. Anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medications are over prescribed. There’s a mental health epidemic on the rise especially in the younger population.
I wanted to understand what happens in our brains when we take anti-depressants, and what can I do as a designer to create spaces that improve mental health by reducing depression?
